Kauffman Fellows Program Town & Country Village 855 El Camino Real, Suite 12 Palo Alto, CA 94301
6:00 to 8:30 pm 6:00 to 7:00 pm: Reception (food/drinks provided) 7:00 to 8:30 pm: Presentation, Discussion, and Conversation
What makes places like Silicon Valley tick? Can we replicate that magic in other places?
Explore the answer to this mystery at a special discussion with Victor W. Hwang (Harvard AB ‘93), one of the world’s leading experts at the intersection of venture capital and global development. Victor advises institutions like the World Bank, the State Department, the National Institutes of Health, and many others on how to develop innovation and entrepreneurship. His firm’s clients include dozens of governments and institutions around the world, including the Middle East, Latin America, Central Asia, East Asia, and Europe.
SPEAKER:
Victor W. Hwang is the co-author of a new book—The Rainforest: The Secret Recipe of Innovation Ecosystems—which proposes a radical new theory to explain why certain human networks generate extraordinary creativity and output, while others do not. Victor argues that free market thinking fails to consider the impact of human nature on the innovation process. This ambitious book challenges the basic assumptions that economists have held for over a century. Furthermore, the book provides practical tools for readers to design, build, and sustain new Rainforests.
He is the co-founder and Managing Director of T2 Venture Capital, a Silicon Valley venture firm at the intersection of private venture and public policy. T2VC grows startups, manages capital, and builds innovation ecosystems around the world. T2VC advises governments on capital formation, innovation policy, and entrepreneurial programs.
Victor is a Kauffman Fellow, a member of a selective program to groom leaders of the venture capital industry. He is the immediate past President of Larta Institute, one of the nation's leading organizations helping to commercialize technology from key government agencies, such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He advises the World Bank on innovation and venture capital formation in emerging markets. He has mentored over 300 companies and has structured venture capital and technology transactions as a corporate attorney in leading law firms. Victor was appointed to the California Blue Ribbon Task Force on Nanotechnology and was awarded a Marshall Memorial Fellowship, a program for emerging trans-Atlantic leaders.
Victor graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. with Honors, studying Government plus additional studies in Computer Science, Computer Architecture, and Operating Systems Design. He graduated from the Law School of the University of Chicago with a J.D. He was appointed as a Law Clerk in the General Counsel’s office of the U.S. Agency for International Development in 1997 and served in national politics from 1995 to 1997.

The Economic Crisis and Its Aftermath: What to Ask the Person in the Mirror
Monday, Mar 12, 2012 6:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Quadrus Conference Center 2400 Sand Hill Road Menlo Park, CA 94025
Successful leaders know that leadership is less often about having all the answers-and more often about asking the right questions. The challenge lies in being able to step back, reflect, and ask the key questions that are critical to your performance and your organization's effectiveness.
In "What to Ask the Person in the Mirror", HBS professor and business leader Robert Kaplan presents a process for asking the big questions that will enable you to diagnose problems, change course if necessary, and advance your career. He lays out areas of inquiry, including questions such as:
(1) Do I clearly articulate my vision and top priorities? (2) Does the way I spend my time enable me to achieve my top priorities? (3) Do I give subordinates timely and direct feedback they can act on? Have I developed a succession roadmap? (4) Is my leadership style still effective, and does it reflect who I truly am?
This highly readable and practical guide helps you learn to ask the right questions-and work through the answers in ways that are right for you. By asking these questions, you can craft new strategies for staying on top of your game.
SPEAKER:
Robert S. Kaplan is a Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School and co-chairman of Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, a global venture philanthropy firm. He advises numerous companies around the world. Professor Kaplan will discuss the current economic crisis and its implications through the lens of his new book on leadership, What to Ask the Person in the Mirror (Harvard Business Review Press).
